In the early 1900s, a bronze bell nestled in the steeple of the little white Sunnydale Chapel rang out a clear call to worship across our community. Sunday after Sunday, it invited people to gather, to pray, and to build their lives on the hope of Jesus.
Nearly 120 years later, that same bell has been preserved through the generations and now rests in a place of honor as you approach our current sanctuary. It serves as a reminder that our story has always been shaped by faithful people who trusted that God was at work doing something worth building on.
In 1966, our society, led by Pastor David Abbot, made a bold step of faith and broke ground on what is now the Oasis Home Church sanctuary. The slogan that rallied that campaign was, “Our Thrust by Faith into the Future.”
Now, almost 60 years later, we believe God is calling us to another bold step of faith.
This Legacy Giving Campaign is about going back to our roots so we can go forward to our future. It is about honoring the faith that brought us here and making wise, faithful investments so the next generation has a strong, welcoming place to gather, worship, and encounter Jesus.
What began here over a century ago is still worth building upon, and with God’s help, we want to carry it forward.

Sunnydale and Burien Free Methodist Church, now Oasis Home Church, part of the Free Methodist Church USA, has a vision to develop and deploy healthy, abiding followers of Jesus. We long to continue the legacy of faithful, committed believers choosing to be located and rooted in the Sunnydale/Burien community. We also want to move forward and refresh the building and property to serve more generations in the coming decades.
Our slogan to rally this campaign is "Going back to our roots, to go forward to our future."
Since the formation of this society in March of 1906 we have always been a community church. That was more than just the statement in the sign on the front of the building; it was also about how the people of this society cared for the neighborhood. One example was the leadership of Pastor Leslie Whitehead, who spoke of then Burien Free Methodist at our 75th anniversary as a “sending church.” That was more than just words, as this society cared for Laotian refugees and longed to see a Laotian Church established.
Oasis Home Church, though neither Burien nor Sunnydale remains in the name, continues to be a Free Methodist society with a focus on our community. We have a set of values for the church building and property that prioritize the gospel transformation of our Sunnydale neighborhood. Though we are a church of home churches, we continue to cherish the heritage of our building and property. Being the longest-standing resident in our neighborhood is certainly a testament to God’s faithfulness!
We long to continue our legacy as a community church and have invested in needed updates to ensure that is possible!
One of our values at Oasis is “Generosity in all things.” We are committed to deploying our finances, resources, and leadership for God’s Kingdom! The building is a large part of what God has called us to steward, and we use the building for many “Kingdom” purposes:
Yet there is more of the building that we long to see utilized for Kingdom impact. In 2023, our society was at a critical tipping point, and major repairs were needed to keep the building in use. Current Pastor Mark Miller and the BOA took a bold step of faith to secure a $250,000 loan from the Free Methodist Foundation to begin the necessary work.
With the successful completion of major projects, we are now positioned to see the building and property for an even greater Kingdom impact for decades to come!
Stories that span over a century of faithful ministry on this property testify to its impact on so many lives! We cherish this legacy, knowing that few churches in the Burien community have experienced such a rich heritage. People come by often to share about how this building was formative in their faith journey, and we long for those stories continue to be sown into the future.
If this building has played a role in your faith, would you consider giving generously to future generations so that this building, with all of its rich heritage, will be equipped to play a role in their faith formation?
In 2026, we will celebrate 120 years of God’s faithfulness through this church family. We would love for you to join us as we honor the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead with hope toward what God will continue to do in and through Oasis Home Church.
120th Anniversary Celebration
Saturday, March 28 | 1:00–5:00 PM
Celebration Service at 2:00 PM
This will be an open-house style afternoon with time to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate what God has done across generations. Whether Burien Free Methodist/Oasis Home Church has been your church home for decades or you are newer to our community, there is a place for you here.
As part of our Legacy Giving Campaign, this celebration is also a chance to look forward together and invest in the future of this ministry for the next generation.
As we develop this campaign, we want to hear stories of how this building and faith community have impacted your life. Whether through pictures, written stories, or short videos, send us your memories that contribute to our society’s legacy.
Specific prompts to consider:
-How has this building made a lasting impact on your faith journey?
-What are ways this property made a difference in the wider community?
-What would it mean for that legacy to continue to future generations?
100% of what you give will go towards the work done on the building, whether to pay off our current $250,000 loan or to fund upcoming projects.
There are two ways to contribute:
-A one-time gift
-A recurring gift for a period of time
Whatever way you choose to contribute, we are incredibly grateful for your generosity!
